  1. The family of Tyre Nichol, recent victim of fatal police brutality in Memphis, have said that if Tennessee had a Tyre's law, mirrored after Buffalo's Cariol law, it could have prevented his death. The Cariol law, name after former Buffalo police officer Cariol Horne, requires police officers to intervene if their partner is using excessive force. Learn more at WGRZ 2.
  2. The Pride Center of WNY's LGBTQ+ cultural competency training services for local institutions are growing to meet demand. Em Bystrack, MPH, who has trained over 1,700 local people already, has been promoted to the engagement and education manager. She said, "I'm incredibly honored to take on this role and look forward to connecting with even more organizations as we continue to build greater social support for individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ across the region."   3. Doctors from Guild Eyewear Studio and Cornerstone Periodontics and Dental Implants are traveling to the Dominican Republic on a medical mission. Both locations are currently accepting donations of shoes, glasses and other things for the March trip. Find out more information through WKBW 7.
  4. The city is offering youth ages 16-21 paid Red Cross certified lifeguard training in response to last summer's lifeguard shortage. Certification courses run either over BPS February break (from February 20-24) or through the weekends of March. Details can be found at WKBW 7.
  5. Marshawn Smith, 28, plead guilty to third degree larceny after stealing a total $66,298 from his employer between April 2020 and August 2022. Smith could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison. More information through WKBW 7.
