📰 News we're reading

1. New York ends ‘100-foot rule' for natural gas hookups and how that may impact Western New Yorkers (wkbw.com) — Buffalo homeowners planning new construction or adding gas service could soon face thousands of dollars in new upfront costs after New York ends its long-standing “100-foot rule” for natural gas hookups. Existing gas customers in Buffalo likely won’t see direct changes, but future projects must budget for full connection costs as utilities stop subsidizing the first 100 feet of line.

2. 'I feel I can do anything': Persistence Preparatory holds coat ceremony to mark milestone for students (wkbw.com) — Fifth graders at Persistence Preparatory Academy on Buffalo’s East Side just marked a major milestone with a Blazer Coating Ceremony celebrating their growth and strong state test scores. The charter school, now in its eighth year serving 480 K-8 students, says the blazers symbolize pride and accountability as it prepares its first graduating class this spring.

3. Parents Say Electric School Buses Leave Kids Cold (wowo.com) — Buffalo-area parents are voicing worries that electric school buses may leave kids cold and occasionally delayed during harsh winter weather, including in the Lake Shore Central School District. District leaders insist heaters must be used on all routes and say routes are planned to preserve both heat and range, as New York pushes toward an all-electric school bus fleet by 2027.

4. Utah foster family faces deportation scare after accidental border crossing (wgrz.com) — A Utah foster family’s visit to their sons’ birth mother in Buffalo turned terrifying when a wrong turn over the Peace Bridge into Canada led to the Haitian boys being detained for hours by U.S. Border Patrol. The teens were eventually released, but the family says the scare shows how a simple driving mistake near Buffalo’s border crossings can have serious consequences.

5. Convicted killer charged in death of Lockport woman (cnhi.com) — Investigators say a man already imprisoned for killing two Buffalo women is now charged with murdering a Lockport woman whose remains were found hidden in a Niagara Falls apartment building. Buffalo police have worked closely with Falls and Chautauqua County investigators as they connect multiple cold cases and trace the suspect’s movements between Buffalo and the Falls.
