Wanted Brooklyn Rape Suspect Calls 911, Asks Cops for a Ride

Bushwick resident Michael Mann, 52 — a convicted sex offender — was arrested on site.

BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — A middle-aged sex predator living on Kosciuszko Street, suspected of violently raping a 27-year-old woman in the wee hours Tuesday, was arrested the very next day after he called 911 and asked cops for a ride, according to the New York City Police Department (NYPD).

Michael Mann, 52, called police "in order to report some kind of dispute," an NYPD spokesman told Patch.

"Then, while they were talking, he asked for a ride."

The senior officer who responded to Mann's call, the police spokesman said, "started looking the guy up and down, and realized he matched the description" of a man wanted for raping a woman at knifepoint near the intersection of Dekalb and Bushwick avenues while she was walking home from the J Train's Kosciuszko Street subway stop the night before.

Mann was carrying a knife; was wearing some of the same clothing the woman had described; and made statements to police implicating himself in the rape, according to the New York Daily News.

He was arrested immediately and charged with rape, robbery, criminal sex act, sex abuse, menacing, forcible touching, criminal possession of a weapon, false personation and possession of a forged instrument.

The alleged Bushwick rapist also turned out to be a Level 3 sex offender who hadn't been reporting his address to authorities, as is required, according to the NYPD.

In 1983, Mann was arrested for raping another young woman at gunpoint, state records show.

In his latest alleged sex attack, Mann is accused of approaching a 27-year-old woman on a dark street around 2:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16, then raping her at knifepoint in a nearby garage.

The Daily News reported that the young woman had just returned from a trip to Coney Island with her friends, and was walking home from the J stop when she was attacked. "I will stick you," her rapist reportedly told her while threatening her with his knife.

More from the Daily News:

She gave him her phone and $5, and Mann promised to return the items “if you do what I say,” sources said. The sicko pulled down her pants, used the knife to cut away her bathing suit, raped her and forced her to perform oral sex, sources said.
He returned her things, warning, “I have seen you around before,” and that he’d kill her if she told cops, sources said.

Rape reports in North Brooklyn are up 17 percent through mid-August, compared to the same time period last year, NYPD statistics show. And in Bushwick in particular, the spike in sex attacks has been much more extreme: Rape reports are up 31 percent, from 16 last year to 21 this year.

In another wee-hours rape attempt in Bushwick in late June, a man slashed his victim's throat before she was able to escape.

And one month later, in late July, a 29-year-old Bushwick woman was raped by a nearly 200-pound man who snuck into her bedroom while she was sleeping.

No arrests have been reported in those cases.

Patch has reached out to the NYPD's press office with a request to interview Deputy Inspector Maximo A. Tolentino, commanding officer of the 83rd Precinct — which covers Bushwick — about recent crime trends in the area and how police are addressing them. We have yet to hear back.
