Bushwick Bar's Cocktail, 'Painkiller,' Favorite 2016 Drink Of New Yorker Writer
The Johnsons in Bushwick serves a $4 alcoholic slushie called "The Painkiller" that one New Yorker writer ranked her favorite drink in NYC.
BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — Emma Allen, a New Yorker writer who covers the bar scene in New York City, recently told NPR that her favorite cocktail in all of the NYC area in 2016 was The Johnson's "The Painkiller," a rum-based slushie with pineapple, orange, and coconut, among other flavors. It's an unexpected contender considering it basically looks like something off of a Disney World menu.
Allen told NPR that Bushwick's location of The Johnson's is "the sort of cleaned up younger sibling" of Welcome to the Johnson's in the Lower East Side, which she calls "really dank, disgusting."
"And they have a slushy machine there, sort of ala 7-Eleven, like a Slurpee cocktail. And they serve it from this machine, The Painkiller, which is a rum-based coconut flavored - it's got some pineapple in there, some orange. And during the day it costs as little as $4."

Don't be beguiled by the friendly, tropical appearance of The Painkiller. The concoction is strong, and just one will be enough for a substantial buzz.
"Ok yes, it comes from a daiquiri machine but PLEASE do not let that fool you," wrote one Yelp user. "It is probably one of the strongest drinks in the place. My friend and I come on the reg and get floaters on top of them and by the time we leave, we are always giggling and wobbly."
