Bushwick High Schoolers Film Award-Winning Sex Ed Video: WATCH

The video, which won the AMAZE young animator contest, talks candidly about sex in a way young people will want to digest.

BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — Brooklyn public schools have a sex ed problem — the problem being that any kind of sex ed is out of touch. So a handful of students at Bushwick's EBC High School of Public Service took the matter into their own hands and made a sex ed video of their own. The video aims to make the issue more relevant to kids who might be confused about sex and their changing bodies.

The video, called "When Will I Be Ready? When Should I Have Sex?," encourages healthy relationships among teens. The video recently won the AMAZE young animator contest, with over 2,500 votes.

It was filmed as part of an online video project called AMAZE, which aims to reach young people ages 10 to 14 through online videos about sex education that are more in touch with the zeitgeist.

The video promotes education about STDs, consensual relationships, and using birth control and condoms to prevent unwanted pregnancy. And most of all, it promotes a mentality where kids don't pressure each other to lose their virginity or consider it a competition.

The tone of the video is supportive to high school students and doesn't pander to them, which is a difficult balance to strike.
