Bushwick Mother Stabbed to Death by Son in 'Brutal' and 'Personal' Attack, DA Says

Ruth Maciera, 48, was "beaten, bludgeoned and her throat cut so deep bones in her neck were exposed," prosecutors say.

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN, BROOKLYN — The prosecutor in the case of a Bushwick man charged for fatally stabbing his own mother delivered brutal opening statements to a jury Wednesday, describing for them the bloody murder scene where a 48-year-old woman was found dead in her Bushwick home in 2014.

"Five days before Christmas 2014, Ruth Maceira was beaten, bludgeoned and her throat cut so deep bones in her neck were exposed," Assistant District Attorney Emily Dean said to the jury, the New York Daily News reported.

"This was a brutal, personal killing," Dean said to a courtroom that included the victim's broken-hearted family, according to the Daily News.

Apollo Hernandez was indicted by a grand jury, charged with murder in the second degree and tampering with evidence, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney's office.

Hernandez, 31, is being tried for allegedly attacking his mother inside her apartment at 116 Grove St. on Dec. 20, 2014. At the time, Hernandez was out on bail after being charged with incest and rape on May 22, 2014 for allegedly raping a family member. His father had paid his $3,500 bail. But upon finding out about his wife's stabbing and beating, Hernandez's father demanded his money back and put his son back in jail.
