In Bushwick Rape Attempt, Attacker Slashes Woman's Throat, Police Say

The would-be Bushwick rapist managed to escape, and was still on the loose Monday.

BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — A 25-year-old woman was slashed across the neck by a man who tried to rape her near the intersection of Wyckoff Avenue and Starr Street early Sunday morning around 5 a.m., according to the NYPD.

Police are now on the hunt for her attacker. He was still at large Monday afternoon.

"The suspect approached the 25-year-old female victim from behind, placed a sharp object to her throat and told her to [bend] over," police said in a statement sent to Patch.

"The victim yelled out for help and after a brief struggle she managed to break away from the suspect but not before he cut her neck with the sharp object," police said. "The victim ran from the suspect and sought shelter inside a nearby store. She suffered a 4-inch laceration on her neck and was removed to Wyckoff Hospital in stable condition."

The NYPD's top suspect in the case, pictured above, is believed to be a Hispanic man between 20 and 30 years old.

He stands around 5-feet-6-inches and 5-feet-9-inches tall and weighs around 190 pounds, police said, and was last seen wearing a black-and-red baseball cap; a black, long-sleeved shirt; and dark-colored pants.

Overall in the city, rape reports are up 10 percent so far this year compared to the same time period last year, according to NYPD statistics. In the Brooklyn North division, which includes Bushwick, they're up 5 percent — from 99 rapes last year to 104 this year. And in next-door Queens, rapes have jumped 17 percent.
