New Bushwick Bar, The Stoop, Serves $12 Cocktail in Paper Bag

The Stoop on Wyckoff waxes nostalgic about the Bushwick of the 80s, with 2016 prices.

BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — A new bar that opened last month in Bushwick off the Halsey L stop, called The Stoop, is a total homage to the way the neighborhood was in the 80s.

It's more of a bougie, 2016 interpretation than anything else.

To sum up the experience, you can get a $12 Hennessy-based cocktail, but it's served in a brown paper bag.

Marvin Carbajal, who grew up in Bushwick, opened the bar and grill this week with the help of some family members. Bushwick Daily took a tour of the menu and interior design of the place, revealing a modern yet inviting set-up.

Located at 853 Wyckoff Ave. — between Cornelia Street and Jefferson Avenue — The Stoop replaced what used to be the San Cecilio Beer Garden and Grill, a Salvadoran eatery that was known for its pupusas.

Carbajal was born in Honduras and raised by his grandmother. His parents traveled to the United States and became naturalized citizens, promptly sending their children to America to raise them in Bushwick.

Of the neighborhood, Carbajal said he was shocked at its grit, and that it "looked like a scene from World War II at times," he said.

The Stoop represented the cleanliness and safety of his own home to him, he said.

The bar supports the surrounding community, holding celebrations for groups like the Little League baseball team. And its happy hour deals are pretty good, too.

The Stoop is open Wed-Thurs: 4 p.m.-midnight. Fri: 3 p.m.-3 a.m. Sat: 12 p.m.-3 a.m. Sun: 12 p.m.-midnight.
