Hamilton Ave. Pedestrian Bridge Re-opens Monday

The bridge has been closed for repairs since July.

For the past four months, pedestrians have been crossing busy Hamilton Avenue in order to move between Red Hook and Carroll Gardens.

But luckily it was announced today that the Hamilton Avenue pedestrian bridge, which was by the State DOT, is re-opening Monday, Oct. 31 at 6 a.m.

Work on the 353-foot-long bridge, which connects Hicks Street and Hamilton Avenue on one side of the Gowanus Expressway to Henry Street and Coles Street on the other side, was originally scheduled for 2014, but inspections forced the DOT to begin work earlier.

In a statement, Adam Levine of the state DOT said a "more severely deteriorated bridge deck" was found and that extensive steel repairs were needed.

The bridge may not have made it through another "harsh winter," said Levine.

According to the DOT:

Nearly 9,000 pounds of steel was replaced or added in order to stiffen and reinforce the structure, and over 90 percent of the concrete deck, or sidewalk, was replaced. The total cost of the work was approximately $1.6 million.

The bridge was on Oct. 10.
