Here are the top stories in Center Moriches-Eastport today:
- The Eastport Plaza at 5-25 Eastport Manor Road, that is 97 percent leased, has been purchased by a Florida-based retail center owner and real estate investment trust. The same owner purchased three other shopping centers on Long Island. The 6.87-acre property holds a 45,466 square foot retail center. In addition to the King Kullen, tenants include RiteAid, Michelangelo Pizzeria and Restaurant, Eastport Plaza Delicatessen, Suffolk Federal Credit Union, among others. It is not clear what the new owner intends to do the property, if anything at all. (Long Island Press)
- I remember getting ducklings for Easter one year, I was a child and did not know how to care for them. People considering adopting rabbits and chickens need to consider their ability to commit to the care of the animals for years to come — and not just right now, Southampton officials warn. Consider alternates such as chocolate rabbits or stuffed rabbit and chick toys. (Southampton Patch)
- New York State approved Plant Connection on Sound Avenue in Riverhead for an adult-use cannabis cultivator license. Adult-use cultivators are prohibited from being licensed as retailers or locations for on-site consumption under the 2021 legislation that legalized recreational marijuana in New York State. A handful of other approvals went to applicants in the NYC-LI region. (RiverheadLOCAL)
- A Department of Environmental Conservation spokesperson confirmed that three owls, an adult great horned owl and two owlets, in Peconic, tested positive for the avian flu, which has been detected in several eastern states so far in 2022 and can be particularly dangerous for livestock. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention said that the avian flu in birds is not an immediate public health concern. The DEC said the public should report dead ducks, geese, swans, waterbirds (including gulls), raptors, pheasants, turkey and grouse, or any group of five or more dead birds in one area to the regional DEC Wildlife office at wildlife.r1@dec.ny.gov or call 518-478-2203.
