A 29-year-old driver died late Friday night after crashing his car into an oak tree in Central Park, according to police.

CENTRAL PARK, NY — A 29-year-old driver died late Friday night after he lost control of his car and drove it into an oak tree in Central Park head on, police said.

The man, who police have not yet identified, was driving a 2013 Nissan Altima on West Drive in Central Park, according to authorities. Police currently believe that the man was speeding while driving south down West Drive, and that a curve in the roadway sent his car onto the curb and then into a oak tree, according to a statement from the NYPD. No one else was injured in the crash, police said.

Police said they responded to a 911 call reporting the crash at about 11:13 p.m. on Friday night, and found the driver unconscious and unresponsive inside his car, which had crashed on West Drive near 60th Street. The man was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
