Nor'Easter Could Slam NYC With 60 MPH Wind Gusts, Coastal Flooding

A strong coastal storm is likely to bring damaging winds, beach erosion, flooding and heavy rain, forecasters warn.

NEW YORK CITY — Forecasters are warning of a potentially significant coastal storm that could slam the Big Apple with 40-60 mph wind gusts, coastal flooding, and up to two inches of rain.

The storm could evolve into a named tropical storm, but may be more akin to a powerful winter nor'easter, just without the snow, AccuWeather forecasters said.

"Along the immediate coast, winds are likely to get strong enough with this from southeastern Virginia to Delmarva, New Jersey and southeastern New York and possibly southern New England to lead to tree, power line and property damage," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Dombek said.

While the storm won't reach New York City until Sunday around 4 a.m., forecasters are concerned that this could be a severe event due to heavy winds, despite the forecast not being totally set in stone.

According to the New York City Department of Emergency Management, forecast models currently predict one to two inches of rain over a roughly two-day period, though the exact timing and amount remain uncertain.

The Department of Emergency Management said its primary concern at this point is coastal flooding, since heavy rain could coincide with high tides and gusty winds, potentially leading to flooding in low-lying and shoreline areas. Rough surf and beach erosion are also possible, the city officials said.

"If you live in a coastal area, now is a good time to review your flood plan and be ready to move vehicles from flood-prone streets, and secure outdoor items," the New York City Department of Emergency Management said on its X (formerly Twitter) account.

The storm will coincide with the end of the Jewish holiday Sukkot. New Yorkers celebrating the holiday should make sure their structures are secured in the event of strong winds.
