Bernie was a platoon leader in Vietnam and Cambodia. He has a Purple Heart for his combat service. When he returned home to the San Francisco airport, he was spit upon by a crowd. He could not find a job because he was told that he lacked experience, despite the fact that he led 50 soldiers in F Troop while serving. It was a tough time for him and our country.
