Google Doodle Honors Zaha Hadid

Google Doodle Honors Zaha Hadid, the renowned architect whose Chelsea building is nearing completion.

CHELSEA, NY — Google is honoring the late architect Zaha Hadid with its "Google Doodle," which is greeting web searchers everywhere with Hadid's image exactly 13 years after she became the first woman ever to win what's considered the "Nobel Prize for architecture."

Hadid, who died of a heart attack last year, is recognized around the world for her innovative and out-of-the-box designs. In 2004, Hadid became the first woman to win the Pritzker Prize, one of architecture's most prestigious awards.

The Iraqi-born British architect left several projects unfinished before her death at age 65, including the luxury apartment building currently going up in Chelsea. The building, located at 520 W 28th St., is visible from the High Line, and it's unique exterior and slow ascension is unavoidable for those meandering through the elevated public park. The building is nearly completed, and is expected to open for sales later this year. (For more news from Chelsea, subscribe here for free news alerts and updates from Patch.)
