Cars Collide at Downed Traffic Light
Hurricane Irene knocked out several traffic lights on Commack Road, making intersections dangerous.
Two cars were involved in an accident at Commack Road near the service road of the LIE in Commack Monday, as Hurricane Irene knocked out power to the traffic light at the intersection.
At approximately 10:30 a.m., the driver of a 1998 red Mercury Sable, who was traveling with her 3-year-old son, was crossing the intersection when the driver of a 2010 blue Ford van attempted to make a left turn and hit the oncoming vehicle.
No police officers or crossing guards were directing traffic at the time of the collision.

No serious injuries were reported.
After the accident, members of the Suffolk County police laid out cones in the intersection and began directing traffic.

The light has since been restored.
