The school district's annoucement Tuesday came as a surprise to many, given that the infection is rare.

Though the person is no longer considered a health risk since they have been removed from the school and are receiving treatment, hundreds of students and teachers at the high school may have been exposed to the illness. The district said in a message on their website they are notifying students and faculty that may have have had direct or prolonged contact with the infected individual via mail.
