2. Chuck Schumer Says ‘Go Bills' Before Addressing Brown, Sydney Shootings (newsweek.com) — One of the Sydney Hanukkah shooting victims is remembered as a pillar of the Crown Heights Jewish community, not far from Senator Chuck Schumer’s home. Schumer’s remarks mixed condolences, a call to fight antisemitism and gun violence, and criticism of Instacart’s alleged A.I.-driven price gouging, while some online focused on his lighthearted “Go Bills” opener.

3. Former congressmember and Brooklyn political icon Ed Towns receives key to the city of New York (brooklyneagle.com) — Longtime Brooklyn congressmember Ed Towns, who once represented Crown Heights along with other historically Black neighborhoods, has been honored with the key to New York City. 4. At a Dark Moment, Jews in New York Celebrate the Festival of Lights (nytimes.com) — Crown Heights residents are joining public Hanukkah lightings across Brooklyn while grappling with fear and resilience after the Sydney attack. Locals describe feeling uneasy wearing visible Jewish symbols, even as they insist on staying publicly Jewish and debate how to balance concern for Palestinians with alarm over rising antisemitism and shifting New York political currents.

5. Rabbi Yona Salpushnik, 89, AH (anash.org) — Crown Heights readers are connected to this loss through Rabbi Yona Salpushnik’s son, who lives in the neighborhood. The 89-year-old mashpia, a longtime Chabad chossid who survived WWII, learned in Brooklyn, served on shlichus in South America, and later settled in Jerusalem, is remembered for his close connection to the Rebbe and decades of teaching and community leadership.
