LI Weather: 70 MPH Wind Gusts, Quarter-Size Hail Possible

BREAKING: A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the island. See the latest forecast.

LONG ISLAND, NY — A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect on Long Island until 6 p.m. Wednesday. Quarter-size hail and 70 mph wind gusts are possible during any storms, the National Weather Service says.

"These winds could bring tree limbs down on wires and cause outages," PSEG Long Island said. "We are monitoring the weather and crews are prepared."

The chance of thunderstorms on the island will rise as the afternoon wears on. Things will dry up Wednesday night.

Wednesday Afternoon- Showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds. High near 63. Breezy, with a south wind around 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday Night- Showers and thunderstorms before 9pm, then a slight chance of showers between 9pm and 10pm. Low around 34. Wind chill values between 25 and 30. Breezy, with a northwest wind 18 to 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 53. Wind chill values between 25 and 35 early. Breezy, with a west wind 22 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph.

Thursday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 38. Breezy, with a west wind 16 to 20 mph.

Friday
Sunny, with a high near 62. Breezy, with a west wind 17 to 22 mph.

Friday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 44.

Saturday- Increasing clouds, with a high near 64.

Saturday Night- Rain likely, mainly after midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 49. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Sunday- Rain likely, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 61. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
