Babylon To Host Safe Collection of Hazardous Materials

Residents are encouraged to go through their home to look for hazardous wastes in need of disposal.

WEST BABYLON, NY — Residents of the Town of Babylon can soon dispose of their hazardous wastes safely.

The town's Department of Environmental Control will hold its annual S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) Day on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Residential Recycling Center, located at 57 Field Street in West Babylon.

Residents are encouraged to go through their home to look for hazardous wastes that are in need of disposal. All materials must be bagged or boxed and labeled, so STOP workers and remove them from your vehicle for you.

Proof of residence will be required.

Acceptable household hazardous waste products include: acids; aerosols; antifreeze; automotive fluids/care products; chlorine; cleaning products; driveway sealer; fluorescent bulbs; freon canisters; full propane cylinders; gasoline; granular fertilizer containing insecticide; herbicides; mercury containing products; oil paints and stains; pesticides/insecticides; pool chemicals' solvents; thinners and reducers.

The program will not accept: alkaline and rechargeable platters; construction and demolition debris; kerosene; latex paint; non-hazardous recyclable materials; and tires.

Ammunition, asbestos, explosives, and radioactive materials are also unacceptable.
