WHEATLEY HEIGHTS, NY — A Long Island day camp that provides services for children living with cancer received a high honor from local officials earlier this week, who presented the camp with a Certificate of Special Recognition.
According to the camp, its mission is to "bring back the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings on Long Island." The camp offers an inclusive summer day camp, year-round programs and in-hospital recreational activities, all free of charge.
Councilman Terence McSweeney presented the award to camp medical director Dr. Mark Atlas and the Sunrise team.

"As someone who grew up with a sibling with a disability, I know how important it is to create spaces where every child feels included and celebrated. During my tour of the upgraded facilities at Sunrise Day Camp, I was so impressed by the thoughtful improvements that make an already remarkable place even more special," McSweeney told Patch. Sunrise truly gives kids with cancer, and their siblings, the chance to just be kids again."

In a statement, McSweeney's office said it is "proud to have Sunrise Day Camp as part of our Town of Babylon family, making a difference, one child at a time."
