'Remarkable Man': West Babylon Resident Honored With Street Renaming

The legacy of a "remarkable man" who was an NYC Transit Police Officer and civic leader was honored with a street renaming on Long Island.

WEST BABYLON, NY — The legacy of a "remarkable man" and West Babylon community member will live on thanks to a recent street renaming.

John D. Norris, a retired NYC Transit Police Officer, civic leader and founding member of the Belmont Lake Civic Association, was honored with the unveiling of John D. Norris Memorial Way on Essex Street from Straight Path to Lamont Place in June.

In a statement, officials said Norris was a "remarkable man" who "dedicated his life to public service, youth mentorship and community advocacy."

Norris' family and friends were joined by Suffolk officials including Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Suffolk County Legislator Jason A. Richberg and Assemblyman Kwani B. O'Pharrow gathered in June to celebrate the renaming.
