Long Island Weather: Saturday Snow Total Projections Rise Again

The National Weather Service expects a sharp cut-off in the precipitation, meaning a wide range of potential snow totals across the island.

It's time to find the shovel.

Snowfall projections continue to creep up for a Saturday winter storm that is set to impact Long Island.

A winter storm warning will be in effect for eastern Suffolk County, where 4-8 inches of snow is expected, from 7 a.m. Saturday until 1 a.m. Sunday. A winter weather advisory will be in effect for that same time period for western Suffolk, where 3-6 inches is the most likely scenario, the National Weather Service says.

Most of Nassau County should see 2-3 inches of snow, but stay tuned.

The NWS expects a sharp cut off in the precipitation. New York City may get just an inch or two of snow.

"The main question, is where does this sharp cut-off occur," the NWS says. "Most guidance is showing that cut off somewhere around the NYC or Nassau County line northward. If subsequent models runs trend toward the west, higher snowfall amounts may occur further west."

Snow will develop Saturday morning and continue into the evening.

The maps below show the most likely snowfall ranges, the storm's maximum potential snowfall accumulations and the odds of various amounts on different parts of the island.
