'Served With Honor': Ex-Fire Chief Dies Of 9/11-Related Causes

The emergency response communities of Long Island and New York City are mourning the death of a dedicated firefighter and 9/11 responder.

WEST BABYLON, NY — The emergency response community around Long Island and New York City are mourning the death of a dedicated fireman, paramedic, 9/11 responder and family man.

David Burk, of Lindenhurst, died on July 31. He was 61.

In a social media post, the West Babylon Fire Department paid tribute to Burk, writing: "It is with deep sadness that the West Babylon Fire Department announces the passing of Paramedic and Ex-Captain David Burke due to a 9/11-related illness.

"Dave joined the West Babylon Fire Department in October 2001, following six years of dedicated service with the Jericho Fire Department. He brought with him a passion for EMS and a commitment to service that remained unwavering for over two decades.

"During his time in West Babylon, Dave held the ranks of Lieutenant and Captain of the Rescue Squad multiple times and served in numerous leadership roles, including trustee, training officer and CPR Instructor. His impact on our department, especially within EMS, is immeasurable.

"Dave also served nearly 24 years with the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), recently retiring as a Deputy Chief of Division 9. He was a 9/11 responder who served with honor in the aftermath of the attacks and ultimately gave his life due to the health consequences of that service.

"He held a bachelor’s degree in emergency management from the Metropolitan College of New York and was widely respected throughout the emergency services community.

"Above all, Dave was a devoted family man. He leaves behind his loving wife, Rosemarie; his son Daniel and daughter-in-law Michelle; and his daughter Megan and son-in-law Daniel.

"We extend our heartfelt condolences to the entire Burke family. Dave’s legacy of service, leadership, and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Rest easy, Chief — we’ll take it from here."

Wake services will be held on Monday, Aug. 4, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Lindenhurst Funeral Home at 424 South Wellwood Ave. Firematic services will take place at 8 p.m.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Church Roman Catholic Church, located at 666 Albin Ave. in West Babylon.
