Severe Storms Pound Long Island; More Than 46,000 Without Power

UPDATE 11:50 p.m.: There are now 46,791 PSEG customers without power. There are also numerous reports of trees and power lines down.

UPDATE 9:57 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning is now in effect until 11 p.m. for eastern Suffolk County.

The storm will be near:

  • Mount Sinai around 10 p.m.
  • Shirley and Middle Island around 10:05 p.m.
  • Center Moriches and Mastic around 10:10 p.m.
  • Manorville and Wading River around 10:15 p.m.
  • Westhampton around 10:20 p.m.
  • Riverhead around 10:25 p.m.
  • Mattituck and Shinnecock Hills around 10:35 p.m.
  • Peconic around 10:40 p.m.
  • Southold around 10:45 p.m.

UPDATE 9:50 p.m.: There are more than 4,000 power outages reported on the island, according to the PSEG Long Island outage map.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Long Island (see the map below for locations). It's in effect until 10:30 p.m.

At 9:25 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Lindenhurst, moving east at 40 mph, the National Weather Service says. The storm is packing 60 mph winds. Penny-sized hail is possible.

The storm will be near:

Deer Park around 9:3o p.m.
Brentwood and Bay Shore around 9:35 p.m.
Islip and Hauppauge around 9:40 p.m.
Ronkonkoma around 9:45 p.m.
Holbrook and Sayville around 9:50 p.m.
Farmingville around 9:55 p.m.

Expect damage to trees and power lines. For your protection, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building, the NWS urges.
