Suffolk County Police Museum Renamed, Dedicated In Memory of Founder
A ceremony was held Saturday in Yaphank.

YAPHANK, NY — Suffolk County has renamed its police museum after its founder and oftime curator, retired Lt. Tom Smith, who died a year ago.
Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine and Suffolk County Acting Police Commissioner Robert Waring were joined by Smith's family as the museum was renamed and dedicated to Smith during a ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Suffolk County Police Headquarters in Yaphank.
Smith served with the SCPD and then-Village of Babylon Police Department for a combined 42 years, county officials said.

A historian at heart, Smith was instrumental in opening the police museum doors on Jan. 25, 1985. He was involved in its curation to ensure it provided an educational experience of the department’s history to museum visitors.
He died Jan. 29, 2023.

The Suffolk County Police Museum is located at 30 Yaphank Ave. in Yaphank. The museum is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
