'Superb Leader And A Role Model': Deer Park Star Student Athlete

DEER PARK, NY — We all know student athletes who also bring their A-game to other parts of their lives.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know the individual stories behind the leaderboard.

This submission comes from James Petti who nominated Ava of Deer Park-North Babylon.

James, Ava's coach, said that she is in her fifth year of competing in cross-country and track and field. Not only does she have "suberb" leadership skills, but is in the top ten percent of her class.

Why do you believe the star student athlete should be recognized?

Ava has been running track since 8th grade (now in her 5th year) and cross-country since 2021 (junior year). She has accumulated all county awards for cross-country, winter and spring track.

She has competed at the national track and field championships for indoor and outdoor for both New Balance and Adidas in the mile run, 2000 m steeple chase and 4x800m relay .

She is a distance runner who holds numerous school records and is currently captain of the cross-country team and both indoor and outdoor track and field teams.

Ava is a superb leader and a role model to so many of her peers, both on and off the track. She is an honor student and currently ranks in the top ten percent of her class. Ava is still deciding on which division 1 school she wants to attend and will be making that decision shortly.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star student athlete?

That she is kind and is a true competitor. She shows true sportsmanship beyond her role day in and day out. She is the epitome of a scholar athlete.
