70th Pct. Preps for Summer
As summer approaches, beach safety, fireworks, out-of-hand parties and traffic safety is on the minds of those at the 70th precinct.
With the warm weather finally upon us, is on everyone's minds, including those at the 70th Precinct.
"I know we've had a warm winter, however, a lot of things change from memorial day to labor day," said Deputy Inspector Eric Rodriguez, who spoke at the 70th Precinct Community Council meeting . "A lot of things change after school ends."
He cautioned residents to be careful at the beach as riptides can be deadly, and noted there has already been an instance this year where a "I know we don't have any beaches in the 7-0 area… but we want people to have a good time, but the lifeguards leave at 5 [p.m.]"

Rodriguez also told residents to be mindful of advertising parties on social media, as past instances have shown that doing so can cause problems. "Please be careful what you put on there," he said. "You might put you're only have a party with five friends, and 5,000 show up. A lot of kids have access to [social media]."
He said the police will be monitoring Facebook and other outlets of social media to keep track of parties in the area, as well as monitoring parties as they take place.
The police will also be targeting the use of fireworks, including sparklers. "I've spoke about them last month and will continue to speak about them this month and next month. They are illegal," he said.
The 70th precinct will also be working with the 61st and 66th precinct to crack down on traffic laws since driving patterns are expected to change with the warmer weather, including times of heavy traffic and average speeds.
Echoing the City Council's , Rodriguez noted that the police will be targeting bicyclists who do not follow the laws of the road. The 70th precinct will be holding a community affairs outreach program for delivery people, he continued.
