BROWNSVILLE, BROOKLYN — Local resident Daniel Romain, 33, is suspected of killing his mistress, Florida resident Tisa Kelly, 46, just before his wife was expected to return home from work on Sunday, according to a report in the New York Times.
NYPD officers responded to the man’s Brownsville home — located on East 95th Street at Avenue A, near the East Flatbush neighborhood — after receiving a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute at the home around 4:40 p.m., police said.
“Upon arrival, officers observed an unconscious and unresponsive female with slash wounds to her neck,” the NYPD said in a statement sent to Patch.
The New York Times reported that officers found Romain “inside the apartment with plastic bags on his hands and his clothes covered in blood.”
From the Times report:
Upon searching the apartment, the police said, the officers discovered a chilling scene: two knives in the kitchen sink, a pair of scissors on the floor and, in the bathroom, the motionless body of a Florida woman, naked and tied with bedsheets. The smell of bleach pervaded, an apparent sign of a hasty attempt to clean up traces of the crime, the police said.
The woman, Tisa Kelly, 46, had been stabbed numerous times in the neck, back and torso, the police said. She was pronounced dead at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, several blocks away.
Police told the Times that Romain attacked Kelly when she tried to leave the home.
However, a conflicting report in the New York Post said he stabbed her to death when she refused to leave.
According to the Post:
An upstairs neighbor said she could hear “loud banging” as if someone was being “thrown against walls” before police arrived.
There was a short period of silence before a radio was turned up to full blast in an effort to mute the renewed fight, said the neighbor, Quinetta Wooten, 29.
“Around 3 p.m., we heard another commotion. Loud banging started again, but the radio came playing real loud like to cover it up,” she said.
Romain has been charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the NYPD.
