New Pedestrian Island Going in at Ocean and Parkside

If you’ve been wondering what all those construction cones and concrete chunks are doing at the intersection of Ocean and Parkside avenues, the NYC Department of Transportation has your answer on Wednesday afternoon.
According to NYC DOT, a new pedestrian island is being built on Ocean Avenue where it intersects with Parkside, on the north side of the street.

The island is expected to “reduce left turn conflicts and provide pedestrian refuge,” says the department. It is apparently part of the mayor’s Vision Zero traffic safety initiative.
