Why I Filled Out the Census
A neighbor shares important reasons why they filled out the Census, and encourages others to do same. Let's get NYC needed federal dollars.
Yes, I understand that we are all trying to hold to our hats with the wind blowing, while our left shoe is simultaneously starting to come off, but we can’t lose our focus. This is the time that we need to keep our wits about us, and make sure we get the representation we deserve in Congress, and the dollars needed to fight this virus and any or all problems that are headed our way. And the way to do it is get counted in Census 2020.
The first reason as I mentioned, the actual number of representatives New York will get into the House of Representatives, is based on the number of people that are counted during the Census. So, if we don’t all get counted then we will have fewer representatives in Congress to fight for us or the issues that matter to us. Since 1953 New York has lost 18 representatives from the House of Representatives, when we had 45 and we now have 27.
The second reason is because the way the Congress will allocate funding to the will be based on the Census 2020 numbers. So, if fewer people are counted then fewer dollars we will have to fight this virus, and the effects to us all even if we don’t get ill. As you know many people are losing their means of income, and this is not a time for us to lose needed funds. We all need to pull together. We can’t say let someone else do it, we all need to do it.

The two reasons above are my main reasons, but that isn’t all as this will also affect us in other ways as well, since many city agency services base their budgets on the Census, so when we don’t have enough firefighters, enough power to the grid for our area, sanitation workers, sewer maintenance, the list goes on…. These may have been affected by some of us not filling out the Census.
And remember to count everyone under your roof, even if they are just living with you temporarily and do not have a regular home, related or unrelated, renters, all children, even new born.
