2 Train Serenaded By A Cappella Trio

Bernard "BJ" Jones, Del DuWop and J.W. Lance sing "Under the Boardwalk."

If you were on the uptown 2 Train on Tuesday afternoon, you probably heard a trio of men in their 60s and 70s serenade the train with a cappella soul classics.

Bernard "BJ" Jones on tenor, Del DuWop on bass, and J.W. Lance on baritone have been singing together in the subway for 18 years. They slip from train car to car collecting money during the week, a fourth of which they say goes to the Church of the Holy Apostles on 29th Street and Ninth Avenue.

They gave Patch a special private concert Tuesday:

Lance, on the left, said he sings in the famous R&B/soul group The Coasters, whose biggest hits were classics in the 1950s. "You know, The Coasters, of Yakety Yak fame?" he said.

Yakety Yak was The Coasters' most popular single, although Lance started singing for them in 2001.

The group said the NYPD has been kicking them off the trains more often in the past few years, despite their alleged permit to perform within the cars.
