9/11 Tribute Museum Moves To Bigger Space

The new and expanded 9/11 Tribute Museum opened in a bigger space on Greenwich Street on Tuesday.

TRIBECA, NY — The expanded 9/11 Tribute Museum opened in a new space in Tribeca on Tuesday.

The museum, now located at 92 Greenwich St., has expanded in size from its original location, and is now equipped with more exhibition space to tell the stories of the victims of the 2001 terror attack.

Museum and city officials gathered at the new location on Tuesday to celebrate its opening and more than 10 years of service commemorating the victims of 9/11 and preserving their history. (Want more local news? Subscribe here for free breaking news alerts and updates from Patch.)

"The 9/11 Tribute Museum has supported the 9/11 community of families, first responders, survivors and residents for more than 10 years," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. "By allowing those directly affected to share their stories with visitors from around the world, the institution serves as a poignant reminder of the selflessness and courage of New Yorkers. This expansion will allow more visitors to hear their stories and ensure that the memory of those who lost their lives will never be forgotten."

The nonprofit center, which is run by the September 11th Families' Association, first opened in 2006 as a temporary shrine to the victims and their families. Its mission and scope gradually grew until the group decided to move to a larger space to accommodate the more than 4 million visitors who came each year.

The old museum, previously known as the Tribute Center, closed its doors in April to move to the Greenwich Street space.

The new museum was designed by Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership.
