Lower Manhattan Will Turn Into a Pedestrian Paradise Saturday

In the first ever "Shared Streets: Lower Manhattan," a good chunk of the Financial District will be closed off to cars.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT, NY — The city will be closing off a section of the Financial District on Saturday to cars so people can explore by foot or by bike in a program that's the first of its kind called Shared Streets: Lower Manhattan. The afternoon will feature walking tours, al fresco dining, bike valet and rare museum deals.

"It's the perfect weekend to come navigate the winding cobblestone streets of Manhattan's first neighborhood at a pace that it was designed for centuries ago," the city's press release says.

On Saturday, Aug. 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., a chunk of Lower Manhattan from Broadway to Water Street from west to east and City Hall and Fulton Street to State Street from north to south will be a bustling outdoor pedestrian paradise. Cars will be limited in the area during that time to just area residents, emergency cars, and delivery cars, and they can't go faster than 5 mph, the city says.
