Operator Error Caused Deadly February Crane Collapse in Tribeca: Report

According to ABC7, the wind was not the main factor in causing the collapse that killed one person.

TRIBECA, NY — Operator error, as opposed to strong winds as originally thought, caused the crane collapse in Tribeca last February which killed one person and injured two others, according to a report.

ABC7 reports in an exclusive discussion with investigators that an operator's mistake when lowering the boom caused it to collapse across two city blocks near Worth and Church streets. A man walking down the street was killed in the accident, while two people were pulled out of parked cars on the street with serious injuries.

Initial reports indicated that 40 mph winds at the time were likely responsible for the accident. According to ABC, however, the wind was the reason for lowering the crane, but incorrect procedure in doing so caused the crane to collapse.
