Tribeca Killing A Rarity In Lower Manhattan

Omid Gholian's death, ruled a homicide on Tuesday, is the first killing in the precinct since 2015.

TRIBECA, NY — The slaying last month of a man in Tribeca marks an aberration in lower Manhattan, which has seen little violent crime in recent years. For more news from Tribeca and the Financial District, sign up for Patch news alerts here.

Omid Gholian was found dead in his Tribeca jewelry shop last month, reportedly with zip-ties around his neck and a plastic bag over his head. On Tuesday, the city medical examiner's office ruled his death a homicide and said Gholian died from "compression of the neck."

Gholian's death is the first homicide in the first precinct, which includes multiple lower Manhattan neighborhoods, since 2015. Last year, the precinct, which includes Tribeca, the Financial District, and Battery Park City, didn't see a single homicide or gun crimes. Last month's killing is the first homicide in the precinct since 2015, when a man opened fire at a federal building and fatally shot a security guard before killing himself.
