1 Killed In Wrong-Way Driver Collision On Heckscher State Parkway

The incident occurred early Tuesday, New York state police say.

EAST ISLIP, NY — A man was killed on Monday night, after he drove his car on the wrong side of the road and collided with another vehicle on Heckscher State Parkway in East Islip, New York State Police said.

Roy Nelson, 73, of Holbrook, was driving a 2010 Hyundai Sonata, northbound in the southbound lanes on the Southern/Heckscher State Parkway when he struck a 2020 Tesla head on, between Exits 44 and 45, police said.

Nelson was taken to South Shore University Hospital but later died of his injuries, police aid. The driver of the Tesla was also taken to South Shore University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A preliminary investigation reveals Nelson may have suffered a medical emergency.

The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Collision Reconstruction Unit, and the Forensic Identification Unit all responded to the scene.
