East Islip Mourns Young Resident: 'Beautiful Soul Inside And Out'

EAST ISLIP, NY—Members of the East Islip community shared their sadness Monday over the news of a loss of a young neighbor, friend and teammate. Carli Fragala was only 19 years old, and had battled a brain cancer diagnosis for over two years.

The East Islip native was active in local cheerleading, and her former coaches and teams reflected on the impact she had.

East Islip Cheerleading wrote: "We will forever remember Carli as a beautiful soul inside and out who loved without limits and made such an impact on so many lives. Our hearts are heavy but we know she is watching down on us with a huge smile and will always be our biggest cheerleader."

Fragala openly shared her struggles, triumphs and positive outlook throughout her battle with cancer on TikTok. Many of her posts thanked her family and friends for their support.

Gravity Cheer, where Fragala and members of her family were members, posted:

"The Gravity Cheer Family is mourning the loss of one of the strongest young ladies we have known. Carli has always been the most spunky little spirited flier since her days on velocity. Carli was a part of some of the best times Gravity Cheer has ever experienced."

The East Islip Athletic Booster Club shared details of Fragala's death, from a relative, on Monday.

"Heaven has gained another angel today. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Carli. She went peacefully with her loved ones by her side. Carli fought long and hard for 2 years and 7 months. We all believe she is in heaven planning her next trip to Disney. The support from the community has been amazing."

Throughout the teenager's health treatments, the East Islip community rallied around her and her family, with fundraising efforts and gestures of support, shared with the hashtag #fragalapower. In July, on her 19th birthday, over 100 guests celebrated, including Marty Lyons, a former defensive tackle for the NY Jets, who presented her with a citation from the Town of Islip.

Throughout multiple surgeries and clinical trials, Fragala shared on her TikTok how she found joy in the simple teenage milestones, like high school graduations and prom. She made two trips to Disney World this fall, and in one video called her father her true Prince Charming for his support during her illness.

"I thought I'd thank my friends and family and community for having my back through my battle," she wrote.
