EAST VILLAGE, NY — A fire in the East Village left an apartment building "completely unlivable" after spreading throughout the four-story building on Saturday afternoon, FDNY officials said.
FDNY deputy chief Joseph Schiralli said that the fire broke out at 218 E. 9th St. on Saturday afternoon at about 3:23 p.m. More than 100 firefighters responded to the blaze, which spread between the first and second floors, Schiralli said. The fire was declared under control by 5 p.m.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but fire officials believed it started behind the refrigeration unit on the second floor.
