Here are the top stories today in East Hampton:

1. East Hampton Town Police Chief Michael Sarlo, at the recommendation of police department's award committee, issued awards to 15 officers and three public safety dispatchers, Sarlo said. All were recognized for "outstanding and dedicated acts of professional policing" and received award bars to wear above their shields. (East Hampton Patch)
2. Police are searching for a man who robbed a cell phone store in East Hampton Wednesday, police said. The incident took place at 5 p.m. at Montoya Communications on Springs Fireplace Road. Witnesses reported a man wearing a ski mask, a dark-colored jacket over a white sweater with a dark stripe, and dark pants, entered the store and demanded cash from a clerk while displaying what appeared to be a weapon, police said. He made off with cash and fled north on Old Fireplace Road in a light-gray colored pickup truck, police said. 3. The Mental Health Subcommittee of the Community Mental Hygiene Advisory Board is holding a Zoom meeting Feb. 2. 4. Michael Gaines, 44, a Southampton man, was convicted on one count of murder and two counts of burglary in the 2019 shooting death of Mtundu Vanderpool, who was asleep in his bed on the Shinnecock Reservation in 2019, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. "With the jury's verdict, the family and loved ones of Mr. Vanterpool are able to get some small measure of justice for his brutal slaying and the defendant will now be held responsible for committing the heinous act of taking a life," Tierney said.
