Here are the top stories today in East Hampton:

  1. The state may have lowered the mask requirement, but the Town of East Hampton still requires masks at town facilities. As per the Town's press release, "visitors and employees at East Hampton Town facilities must continue to wear masks indoors until a key COVID-19 case metric drops, verifying that East Hampton is an area of 'low transmission,' per the Centers for Disease Control." (Press Release Desk)
  2. New maps have been proposed for the Assembly and Senate district as well as Congressional district maps. "Under the new maps, Long Island would keep the same number of Assembly and Senate districts — 22 in the Assembly and 9 in the Senate — but would change the shape of many of them," Patch reported. After the state's Independent Redistricting Commission failed to reach a consensus on new maps, it fell to the state Legislature to draw the new lines. If approved, the new maps would be in effect for the 2022 elections. (Patch)
  3. The first ever offshore wind project in New York state recently broke ground on Long Island. But construction couldn’t start until attorneys from an Albany law firm beat back a challenge by Long Island property owners to the project, Times Union reported. On Jan. 31, the commission issued the developer a notice to proceed with construction of the project and construction of the transmission line started on Feb. 1, a major step for New York’s clean energy goals, reported Times Union.
