- Although the East Hampton Town board voted unanimously in January to deactivate East Hampton Airport and privatize the facility, reopening within a week β the Federal Aviation Administration sent a letter to town officials this week warning that the process could take up to two years β and East Hampton town officials fired back, saying they expect the airport to reopen as a privatized facility on March 4 as planned. - Dangelo Soto, 21, of Brentwood was arrested as the second man charged in the Christmas day shooting death of Southampton resident Steven Byrnes, 53, in his home, police said. Previously, Dominick Parisi, 57, of Hampton Bays was arrested on Jan. 16; both men were charged with second-degree murder and two counts of first-degree burglary, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said. - Environmental consultants told the Southampton Town Board last week that homeowners along the beaches in Sagaponack and Bridgehampton will need to pay approximately $26 million to pump sand along the shore, as was done in 2014. The $26 million project is slated to begin in late 2023 and be completed in early 2024, 10 years after the original replenishment. "Southampton officials will decide whether to contribute financially, as the project includes four town beaches," said Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman. (Subscription: Newsday)
- This week, the Department of Justice filed a superseding indictment against Montauk fisherman Christopher Winkler, charging him with illegally harvesting considerably larger amounts of fluke and black sea bass than originally alleged, in a scheme authorities said involved two counts of mail fraud, two counts of obstruction and a conspiracy and mail fraud count.
