Here are the top stories in East Hampton today:

  1. Pickleball is the preferred sport of the one percent, why? Pickleball, a tennis-like sport with a funny name, has become popular among well-heeled athletes in Hollywood and the Hamptons during the pandemic. It afforded some social time on the court, a way to get outside, and much-needed exercise without the technical demands of, say, golf or tennis. Out on Long Island’s East End, the sport is poised to be the go-to activity of this summer. This spring, East Hampton Indoor Tennis will install its first pickleball court! (Town & Country)
  2. What are the top reasons that NY residents are leaving the state? According to Unite NY, which cited a poll conducted by John Zogby Strategies, "Roughly 39 percent of 1,000 New Yorkers surveyed say they plan to move out of the state, while 37 percent of those people cited high taxes as their primary reason for leaving. The other top reasons people are looking to leave NY are better economic opportunities elsewhere (15 percent) and politics that put party over voter (14 percent)," according to the poll conducted by John Zogby Strategies.
  3. Turning down the thermostat to conserve on oil heating these days? You are not alone. Heating up your home with oil has become an expensive experience for some Long Islanders. According to New York state, the average price for a gallon of home heating oil is $5.25, a record! Fixed price contract have gone to the wayside, so how better to deal with the volatile oil market? If customers see big bills, oil watchdog Michael O'Connor says to ask the fuel company about level or balanced bill options "That helps spread the cost of home heating out over the year over 12 months," says O'Connor, of NYPRIG Fuel Buyers Group.
