Mass Casualty Drill Involving Train Unfolds In Amagansett, Southampton

The event will take place Sunday though noon and involve EMS services in East Hampton, Southampton towns, with actors portraying those hurt.

AMAGANSETT, NY — A full-scale mass casualty incident drill involving a train is set to take place Sunday morning in Amagansett.

The event will take place on Montauk Highway, beginning at 8 a.m., with the actual drill slated to unfold from 9 a.m. until noon.

All emergency services that serve East Hampton Town have been invited to take part, including fire, EMS and police. The drill has been organized in conjunction with the East Hampton Town Chiefs Association, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and the MTA Long Island Rail Road, organizers said.

Emergency service vehicles will respond to the exercise with actors playing patients, some of whom will be transported by ambulances to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.

The public should know that the exercise is a drill and will not disrupt emergency services, as other crews will be standing by at the ready to answer the regular call volume. Hospital access is also unrestricted, officials said.

Actors playing "patients" will be taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, hospital officials said.

"The exercise is a drill and will not disrupt any hospital services. All staff, patients and visitors will have unrestricted access. Residents in the area will also have access to and from their homes during the training," the hospital said.

Residents should be aware that participating emergency vehicles will be on-site as well as patient actors, the hospital said.

The following road closures in Southampton are anticipated to take place:

  • Meeting House Lane (Between Lewis St and Old Town Rd.)
  • Lewis Street (Between Meeting House Ln and Herrick Rd.)
  • Herrick Road (Between Lewis Street and Old Town Rd.)
  • Old Town Road (Between Rogers Ave and Wickapogue Rd)
  • Wickapogue Road (Between Old Town Rd and Narrow Ln.)
