Here are the top stories today in Five Towns:

  1. Alex Costello breaks down news from the FCC that telephone numbers with the 516 area code will have to switch to 10 digits in October because 988 will be the three-digit number for people to call to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The new number will go into service in July 2022. Because some 516 numbers begin with 988, people calling 516 numbers will now need to add the area code. Residents should reprogram anything with the number saved as well. (Patch)
  2. Jeff Bessen has details on the Town of Hempstead's free child safety ID program at Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park in Cedarhurst village tonight at 6:30 p.m. The event coincides with the summer's last concert at the park. The ID program includes a safety kit with potentially lifesaving information in case of an emergency. (LI Herald)
  3. The Herald also looks at a new gym coming to Hewlett. Hollywood Health Club will open in the former Retro Fitness at 1255 Hewlett Plaza in Hewlett. The owners, who also own Hollywood Health Club in Long Beach, plan to overhaul the space and open in September. (LI Herald)
  4. Juan Lasso reports that a Valley Stream parent has started a petition to ask for a remote learning option. Marteena Morano-Singh circulated the petition online after Valley Stream School District 13 said it would not offer remote learning at its three elementary schools. (LI Herald)
