Hewlett Graduates Receive Special Business Endorsement

Many of the students will pursue further study at business schools.

This press release was written by the Long Island Region of Virtual Enterprises. Its contents have been confirmed by the Hewlett-Woodmere School District.

For the first time, G. W. will have graduating students who qualify for a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Endorsement on their diploma. This select group of students completed the requirements for the New York State Approved Program of Study in Small Business Administration.

According to a New York State School Boards Association article “Using CTE Programs to Help Prepare Students for College and Careers” dated February 2, 2012, by John King Jr., Commissioner of Education: “One of the biggest challenges we face as educators is finding meaningful ways to engage all students ... CTE programs have evolved, requiring higher levels of academic and technical knowledge and skills to be successful today.”

The required qualifications for this CTE endorsement include a meaningful program of study with increasingly advanced course work. In addition, students must prove that they have grown with pre- and post-assessments, and they must pass a written and performance based industry assessment.

The program of study must include a college articulation, have proof of rigor and relevance, provide an opportunity for specialized credits, and include work based learning and an employability profile.

According to Ms. Mattes, Business Education Department Chair, “Virtual Enterprise emphasizes college and career readiness and provides our students with a competitive edge through project-based collaborative learning focused upon the development of 21st Century skills in entrepreneurship, global awareness, problem solving, communication, financial literacy and technology.”

To be eligible, students need a minimum of three credits; however, most have actually earned five or more. The students recognize that they have completed coursework beyond that required for graduation. The graduating students who met all the qualifications are:
