Lawrence High School Students Explore STEM Skills at Bricks and Minifigs LEGO Store

Lawrence High School students recently participated in a dynamic, hands-on STEM learning experience during a field trip to Bricks & Minifigs, a LEGO specialty store located in West Babylon. Led by Mr. Mazzarino, the math class engaged in a series of collaborative activities designed to strengthen communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills in a STEM-based setting.
The purpose of the field trip was to allow students to apply STEM thinking outside the traditional classroom environment. Through structured challenges centered around LEGO building activities, students practiced communicating effectively, thinking critically, and working together to accomplish creative tasks.
Highlights of the trip included:

  • Non-Verbal Tower Challenge: Students were tasked with building the tallest tower possible—without speaking. This activity challenged them to communicate creatively, observe, and collaborate using only gestures and visual cues.
  • Mystery Structure Challenge: In teams, students constructed a mystery structure using LEGO pieces. Other groups then played a version of “20 Questions” to guess what had been built, practicing deductive reasoning, strategic questioning, and descriptive accuracy.
  • Free Build Exploration: Students were invited to build a meaningful place or space from their life or community. This open-ended activity encouraged personal expression, spatial reasoning, and design thinking.

“These collaborative challenges give students the chance to develop essential STEM habits of mind, such as perseverance, communication, critical thinking, and creativity in a fun and engaging environment,” said Mr. Mazzarino. “The hands-on nature of LEGO-based activities allows students to bring math and problem-solving to life.”

Lawrence High School is proud to provide experiential learning opportunities that inspire curiosity and support the development of real-world skills. The district extends its gratitude to Bricks & Minifigs of West Babylon for hosting the students and helping make STEM learning both meaningful and memorable.
