Sandy-Devastated East Rockaway HS Wins 'Dream Prom'

Displaced high school wins prom designed by celebrity party planner David Tutera.

After suffering through Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath, things have finally started turning around for the community of East Rockaway, as the high school was announced as the grand prize winners for Rent the Runway's "Dream Prom" contest.

The high school was among four Sandy-devastated high schools chosen as finalists for the contest, and the only one from Long Island.

The other finalists were Pinelands High School, Toms River High School North and Atlantic City High School — all New Jersey schools.

For nearly two weeks, students and community members were without power throughout East Rockaway. Houses, businesses and parks were destroyed, along with being boats scattered on resident’s front lawns.

We finally got news from our school that we would be displaced to an abandoned elementary school in Baldwin, New York. East Rockaway High School suffered $10 million worth of damage. We are not sure when we are expected to go back, but for our seniors, that may mean never.

East Rockaway seniors will now be treated to the prom of a lifetime, with the following being provided for them: 

  • A "dream prom" designed by celebrity party planner David Tutera to fit the school's prom theme
  • A surprise celebrity musical performance
  • Prom dresses courtesy of Rent the Runway
  • Beauty services from Lancome and Drybar
  • Tuxedo rentals courtesy of Men's Wearhouse
  • College textbook and rental services provided by Chegg
  • DJ, refreshments, photographer and more
