Forest Hills Sees String Of Car Break-Ins, Thefts: Police
There have been 31 reports of thefts from cars in Forest Hills within the last four weeks, a police spokesperson told Patch.
FOREST HILLS, QUEENS — Forest Hills has seen a spate of car break-ins and thefts this month, according to the police.
The NYPD's 112th Precinct has received 31 such reports within the last four weeks, Detective Sophia Mason, a spokesperson for the department, told Patch on Wednesday.
On Jan. 14, police officers arrested two teens they saw trying to break into cars near 63rd Drive and 98th Place, according to Mason. The duo faces charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and possession of burglar tools, both misdemeanors.

Officers are still looking for several suspects in the recent string of car break-ins and thefts and ask anyone with information to contact the 112th Precinct detective squad at 718-520-9252.
"The Commanding Officer of the 112th Precinct has deployed Neighborhood Coordination Officers, patrol officers and anti-crime officers to conduct patrols to monitor the areas affected by these complaints," Mason, the police spokesperson, said in a statement.

Police are warning drivers to always check that their vehicles are locked and to remove any valuables, including electronics and credit cards.

Police did not specify whether the 112th Precinct, which also covers Rego Park, is seeing an increase in these kinds of crimes, but department data shows a slight uptick in the umbrella categories of grand and petit larceny compared to the same 28-day period last year.
Grand larcenies, which include the theft of items worth over $1,000 and stolen credit cards, went from 22 to 30 while petit larcenies went from 74 to 90.
