QUEENS, NY — All branches of the Queens Public Library closed indefinitely Monday to help slow the spread of the new coronavirus, officially known as COVID-19.

During the closures, the library system will expand its collections of digital materials, including e-books, audiobooks, digital magazines, songs, movies and videos, according to Queens Public Library President and CEO Dennis M. Walcott.

Visitors who checked out library materials before the closure should hold onto them until the libraries reopen or officials announce other ways to return them. The library is extending due dates and suspending all late fees during the closure, officials said.

"We know how much our communities depend on our libraries and thank you for your understanding during this challenging time," Walcott said in a statement.

Library officials previously suspended all events and public programming at the system's 65 locations across the borough, but said the libraries themselves would remain open to provide access to books, public computers, Wi-Fi and other resources.
