Afropunk Brooklyn: What To Know Before You Go

FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN — Afropunk is described by organizers as an influential community of young people of all backgrounds speaking through music, art, film, fashion and photography.
Tickets are sold out, but interested volunteers might be able to earn a ticket.

“We are the influencers creatives and tastemakers who were once seen as outsiders but who now directly affect pop culture,” the festival’s website depicts.
The festival has expanded beyond Brooklyn to Atlanta, London, Paris and even as far as Johannesburg.

Artists from past Afropunk Brooklyn festivals have included performances from Ice Cube, Janelle Monáe, Tyler the Creator, Cee Lo Green, Willow Smith, TV On The Radio and others.
Here’s everything you’ll need to know for Afropunk Brooklyn 2017:
When is the concert?
Afropunk 2017 takes place Saturday, Aug. 26 and Sunday, Aug. 27. Set times have not yet been released. The festival will be held rain or shine, organizers say.
Where is the concert?
The festival will be held at Commodore Barry Park, located in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood.
Organizers recommend that subway travelers take the B, Q, or R train to DeKalb Avenue or the F train to York Street. Bus riders can take the B69 to Flushing/N Portland Avenues or the B52 to Fulton/Bond Streets.
Ticket holders will need to present an unexpired, government-issued photo ID to enter.
What can I bring?
Small purses and clear bags are allowed. Festival goers may also bring one — and only one — recyclable container for water. All persons and bags will be searched prior to entry.
These items, however, are not allowed inside the festival:
- Weapons (guns, knives or others weapons)
- Large backpacks, book bags or non-transparent bags larger than hand size (any bag that is not clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and over 12 by 6 by 12 inches in size will not be allowed inside the festival)
- Outside food and drink (other than a single recyclable water container)
- Alcohol
- Illegal substances of any kind
- Umbrellas (rain or beach)
- Coolers or picnic baskets
- Lawn chairs
- Lasers
- Pets (service dogs will be permitted)
- Scooters or personalized motorized vehicles, including hoverboards
- Detachable-lens cameras
- Audio-recording equipment
- Video recording equipment
- Remote-controlled vehicles or aircrafts, including drones
- Unauthorized vendors
- Solicitations, handbills, sampling, giveaways or other efforts/items of this nature
